COMMON HEALTH PROBLEMS FOR MAN

Although men are considered strong physically, emotionally, and socially but they are also at risk of some serious health conditions. Common reasons for the illnesses in man include lake of awareness, negligence and low health education, etc.

Let’s discuss the common diseases a can suffer with.

1. Heart diseases

Heart diseases can be of many types ranging from a vascular compromise to serious damage to heart muscles. All of these diseases can be fatal and have serious consequences if left undetected. According to American Heart Association, one out of three men is at risk of developing some kind of heart disease.

Several risk factors are the reason for developing heart disease. These can be modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. Modifiable risk factors include smoking, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle, excessive intake of fatty food, stress, and some medications as well. Seek early medical advice if any of the risk factors are present in you.

The commonest of the heart problems are

  • Angina
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Myocardial infarction
  • Valvular heart diseases

2. Lung cancer

Although females can also suffer from lung cancer which may be the result of metastasis of another type of cancer, men are more likely to suffer from lung cancer. The commonest cause of lung cancer in man is smoking for many pack years. When an individual smoke 20 cigarettes per day and continues this for one year, then this is equivalent to 1 pack-year. More the pack-years, the more will be the chances of getting lung carcinoma.

3. Substance abuse

It is a common health hazard today. Men suffer more deaths and hospitalization due to alcohol abuse. Alcohol increases the risk of mouth, throat, oesophagus, and colon cancer in men. Substance abuse is also a reason for suicide in men. Moreover, alcohol abuse also causes impotence and infertility in men.

4. Diabetes

Diabetes is more common in men than women. If left untreated, it causes serious complications such as kidney damage, liver damage, blindness, heart diseases, and nerve disorders. Diabetes in men causes a low level of testosterone which results in impotence and infertility.

Diabetes in man can be congenital or acquired from a sedentary lifestyle or poor health habits. Regular exercise and a healthy diet without carbs can help to reduce the damage caused by diabetes.

5. Depression

The reason is that man has to bear more stress in life.” Some ways to combat stress disorders include:

  • Exercise regularly, even just walk around your home
  • Write down the thoughts that are bothering you
  • Communicate clearly with friends and family
  • Seek professional psychological help.

6. Unintentional injuries or accidents

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists that unintentional injury was the most common cause of death in men in the year 2006. Unintentional injuries include drowning, road accidents, and fire burnouts.

7. HIV 

In 2010, men comprised 76% of the people who got HIV infection. HIV is a human immune deficiency virus that puts our body under damage by our immune system.

These are some common diseases that are affecting the lives of the present man.
